9:00 AM

Check-out & Transfer

Disembark from the houseboat at the Alleppey Punnamada Jetty. Transfer to your onward destination (Kochi/Cochin or railway station).

Important Notes for a Cultural Focus:

  1. Boat Selection: Confirm with your operator that the houseboat is willing to take the interior, narrow canals and anchor in quiet, non-touristy areas.
  2. Small Boat Hire: Village and paddy field experiences often require transferring to a small hand-punted canoe/shikara. This is the best way to see local life and is usually arranged by the houseboat crew for a few hours.
  3. Timing: Houseboats typically do not cruise between sunset (around 5:30 PM) and sunrise (around 7:30 AM) as per local regulations and to respect village life. They anchor for the night.
  4. Best Season: The best time for comfortable cruising and observing paddy activities (harvest/sowing) is generally from October to March.

Safety and Health Guidelines

Cruising the backwaters is generally very safe but following basic tropical travel and boat safety rules will ensure a smooth trip.

1. Safety on the Houseboat

  • Safety Equipment: Every houseboat is equipped with sufficient Life Jackets (for adults and children), Life Buoys (throw rings), Fire Extinguishers and a fully stocked First Aid Kit.
  • Listen to the Crew: Pay close attention to the mandatory safety briefing given at the start of the cruise.
  • Movement: Be cautious when walking on the deck especially when the boat is moving. Avoid leaning over the side or moving around unnecessarily on small boats.
  • No Swimming: Do not attempt to swim in the canals or lakes unless explicitly advised as safe by a qualified local guide/crew in a designated area.

2. Health and Hygiene Precautions

  • Hydration: Kerala’s climate is humid. Drink plenty of sealed bottled water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Avoid tap water.
  • Food Safety: The food on the houseboat is typically fresh and prepared hygienically by the onboard chef. When eating outside the boat stick to reputable restaurants to minimize health risks.
  • Sun Protection: Apply Sunscreen liberally wear a hat and use sunglasses, especially when relaxing on the open deck. The reflection off the water can intensify the sun.
  • Mosquito Protection: Mosquitoes are prevalent, particularly around the water at dawn and dusk.
    • Use a good quality insect repellent on exposed skin.
    • Ensure the houseboat windows and doors are properly closed by sunset (your crew will usually do this).
    • Your cabin will usually have a mosquito net or electrical repellent.
  • Medication: Carry a small personal first-aid kit with basic items like antiseptic wipes, band-aids, pain relievers and any necessary personal medications.

3. Cultural and General Tips

  • Respect Local Life: You will be passing through active, conservative village communities.
    • Dress modestly when off the houseboat and walking through the villages or visiting temples.
    • Be respectful of local activities and property.
    • Always ask permission before taking close-up photographs of local people especially women and children.
  • Plastic & Litter: The backwaters are a fragile ecosystem. Do not litter, use the designated bins on the houseboat. Many operators practice “No Single-Use Plastic” policies.
